The goal of every Sportsjam

The goal of every Sportsjam class is to provide children with a positive first experience with sports through cooperative play, rule following, gross motor and skill development, fitness and exercise, and, most importantly, having fun through friendship and being silly!

Focus on the Experience, Not the Reward

Over the years, we’ve observed that children often receive  medals and trophies merely for participation in an activity or organized sport. We’ve learned that they quickly develop an expectation of receiving a medal and that this becomes the drive for participation. When we ask children questions like, “How was soccer? How was gymnastics? How was tennis?” and so on, we often hear responses like “Great. I got a medal.” or “Awesome. I got a trophy.” Many children have come to relate  a positive sports experience directly with the reward—not the activity.

At Sportsjam, children have fun playing sports and focus on the experience, not on rewards they might receive. We’re so excited when we hear kids say,  “That game was fun!” “I like being the tagger.” “I am fast!” Or “I’m  on a team!”

Sportsjammers play an assortment of movement and tag-based games, fun obstacle and agility courses, and parachute play. Depending on age and interest level, children are introduced to many sports such as soccer, basketball, baseball, field/street hockey and tag football.

Class Length

  • Ages 2, 3, 4 = 50-minute class
  • Ages 5 and up = 60-minute class

Site Options

We offer two types of site options. Each follows the Sportsjam curriculum, but because of the settings, Sportsjammers experience different benefits.

Dexter Southfield

  • Absolutely beautiful campus with amazing facilities
  • Full-size athletic field
  • Children feel pride about coming to a sports practice at a “real” field and playing in this type of exciting atmosphere
  • Middle and high school practices/games that often take place nearby add to the experience
  • This can be a wonderful way for children to learn to feel comfortable and confident about going to a sports practice

Backyard Class

  • Backyard classes take place at a host family’s home
  • Benefits include a familiar environment and a smaller class size
  • Great for children who may be hesitant at a larger venue
  • For many, backyard classes are the “right fit” for children beginning their sports careers

Please feel free to contact us to explore which site option might best suit your child.
